Long, long ago, at the edge of a quiet sea, there lived a lighthouse keeper named Max.
Every evening, Max climbed the winding stairs to light the lamp at the very top.
The golden glow spread across the waves like a warm blanket.
And every evening, a baby seal named Bubbles waited on the smooth rocks below.
One soft and sleepy night, Max noticed something.
The lamp's light was flickering.
It glowed… then dimmed… then glowed again.
"The ships need our light to find their way home," Max whispered.
Bubbles wriggled up the steps behind Max, her flippers patting gently on the stone.
She made a soft sound, almost like a yawn.
Max looked at the lamp.
Inside, the wick was nearly used up.
But there was one new wick in the cupboard, tucked behind a jar of sea glass.
Max reached for it carefully.
The glass jar clinked softly, like tiny bells.
"We can do this together," Max said.
Bubbles watched with her big, dark eyes.
She didn't make a sound.
She just stayed close, her warm breath puffing in the cool air.
Max lifted the glass cover of the lamp.
The flame danced and shimmered.
Slowly, gently, Max replaced the old wick with the new one.
The flame grew stronger.
It glowed golden and steady, filling the whole room with soft, buttery light.
"There," Max whispered. "Now the ships will find their way home."
Bubbles clapped her flippers together, just once, very softly.
Max looked out the window.
Far across the water, a tiny boat was gliding toward the harbor, guided by their light.
The stars above sparkled like scattered sugar.
Max sat down on the floor beside Bubbles.
The lamp hummed quietly, a sound like a lullaby.
"We did it," Max said.
Bubbles rested her head on Max's knee.
Her fur was damp and cool, and she smelled like the sea.
Max stroked her gently.
Outside, the waves whispered against the rocks.
Inside, the light glowed warm and golden.
Max felt sleepy now.
The kind of sleepy that comes after helping someone find their way.
"Time for dreams," Max whispered.
Bubbles closed her eyes.
Max closed them too.
And in the lighthouse at Pebble Cove, the lamp kept glowing, steady and bright, while the sea rocked them softly to sleep.
