Ben lived in a little red house at the edge of town.
Every night, he looked out his window at the fire station down the street.
Its soft lights glowed like friendly stars.
Tonight, Ben couldn't sleep.
He sat by his window, watching and wondering…
What do firehouses do when the whole town is dreaming?
His toy fire truck, Blaze, sat on the windowsill beside him.
Blaze was small and red, with tiny silver wheels.
Ben picked him up gently.
"Let's go see," Ben whispered.
He tiptoed downstairs in his soft pajamas.
The night air was cool and gentle on his cheeks.
The street was quiet, wrapped in moonlight.
Ben walked slowly down the sidewalk, holding Blaze close.
The fire station's lights glowed warm and golden.
Through the wide glass doors, Ben could see inside.
Firefighter Emma sat at a wooden table, reading a book.
Her boots were lined up neatly by the door.
The big fire trucks rested quietly in their places, engines cool and still.
Ben tapped softly on the glass.
Emma looked up and smiled.
She opened the door just a crack.
"Hello, Ben," she said softly. "Can't sleep?"
Ben shook his head.
"I wanted to see if you were okay," he whispered.
Emma's smile grew warmer.
"That's very kind," she said. "Would you like to come in for a moment?"
Ben nodded.
He stepped inside, still holding Blaze.
The fire station smelled like clean soap and warm wood.
Everything was peaceful and calm.
The big red trucks gleamed softly under the gentle lights.
"We're here all night," Emma said quietly, "keeping watch while everyone sleeps."
She knelt down beside Ben.
"Just like you're keeping watch over your little friend there."
Ben looked at Blaze in his hands.
"Blaze keeps me safe," he said softly.
"And you keep him safe too," Emma whispered. "That's what heroes do."
Emma walked Ben over to the smallest truck in the station.
It was bright red, just like Blaze.
"This is our rescue truck," she said. "It carries bandages and blankets."
Ben touched the truck's smooth, cool side.
It felt strong and steady.
"Sometimes," Emma said, "the kindest thing we do is just… be ready."
She looked at Ben with gentle eyes.
"Ready to help. Ready to care. Ready to keep watch."
Ben nodded slowly.
He felt something warm and peaceful growing in his chest.
Emma walked Ben to the door.
"Thank you for checking on us, Ben," she whispered.
"You have a hero's heart."
Ben hugged Blaze a little closer.
"Ready to help," he said softly.
The walk home felt shorter somehow.
The moon was bright and full overhead.
Ben's footsteps were slow and sleepy now.
Back in his room, Ben climbed into bed.
He set Blaze on his nightstand, facing the window.
"We're ready," Ben whispered to his little friend.
Through the window, the fire station's lights still glowed.
Soft. Steady. Keeping watch.
Ben's eyelids grew heavy.
His pillow felt like a cloud beneath his head.
His blanket was warm and snug around him.
He thought about Emma reading her book.
About the quiet trucks, strong and ready.
About all the kind people keeping watch tonight…
Ben's breathing grew slower.
Deeper.
Softer.
Outside, the fire station lights glowed on.
Blaze sat on the nightstand, watching too.
And Ben, the boy with a hero's heart, drifted into the warmest, safest sleep.
Ready to help.
Ready to care.
Ready to dream.
