Long, long ago, in a snug little house at the edge of a meadow, there lived a child named Sam.
Sam had a friend named Nutmeg, a sleepy fox with fur as soft as cinnamon.
Every evening, Nutmeg curled up beside Sam on the porch steps.
Together they watched the sky turn from gold to purple to deep, deep blue.
One quiet night, Sam noticed something.
The stars were shining so brightly…
But down the lane, old Mrs. Wren's cottage was dark.
"I wonder if she can see the stars tonight," Sam whispered.
Nutmeg yawned and rested her warm head on Sam's knee.
She made a gentle sound, soft as a sigh.
Sam thought for a moment.
Then Sam stood up, very gently, and said, "Let's bring her some light."
Sam found a small lantern by the door.
It glowed with a soft, golden glow.
Nutmeg padded beside Sam, her paws quiet on the cool grass.
They walked slowly down the lane.
The night air smelled like clover and honeysuckle.
Above them, the stars twinkled like tiny candles.
When they reached Mrs. Wren's cottage, Sam knocked softly.
The door opened just a crack.
"Oh, Sam," Mrs. Wren said in her gentle, creaky voice. "What a lovely surprise."
"I thought you might like some light to see the stars," Sam said softly.
Mrs. Wren's eyes sparkled.
She took the lantern and set it on her windowsill.
The golden glow spilled out into the dark garden.
"Now I can see them," she whispered. "Thank you, dear one."
Sam smiled.
Nutmeg yawned again, a long, sleepy yawn.
Sam and Nutmeg walked back home under the twinkling sky.
The stars seemed to shine a little warmer now.
The night felt a little softer.
"We brought her some light," Sam whispered to Nutmeg.
Nutmeg made her gentle sound again, soft as a sigh.
Back on the porch steps, Sam sat down.
Nutmeg curled up close, her warm fur against Sam's side.
The meadow was full of quiet cricket songs.
The breeze was cool and kind.
Sam felt the sleepiness settling in, soft as a blanket.
"We brought her some light," Sam murmured one more time.
The stars twinkled above.
The lantern glowed far down the lane.
And Sam and Nutmeg, two small heroes, drifted off together…
Safe.
Warm.
Loved.
The night wrapped around them like the softest quilt in all the world.
