Long, long ago, in a little blue house by the railroad tracks, there lived a girl named Ivy and her friend Puddle, a duckling with the softest yellow feathers.
Every night, Ivy and Puddle would sit by the window and watch for the evening train.
Tonight, the train was very late.
Ivy wondered where it could be.
"Maybe the train needs our help," Ivy whispered.
Puddle gave a gentle peep.
So Ivy put on her warm slippers, and together they stepped outside into the quiet dusk.
The air smelled like honeysuckle and soft earth.
A firefly blinked once, twice, above the garden gate.
Ivy followed the railroad tracks, and Puddle waddled close beside her.
Soon they saw a glow in the distance.
It was the evening train, stopped on the tracks.
Its windows glowed like warm honey.
The conductor, a kind old owl, leaned out and hooted softly.
"Our lantern has gone out," he said. "Without it, we cannot see the way home."
Ivy looked around.
The stars were just beginning to appear, one by one.
Then Puddle quacked and pointed with one tiny wing.
There, by the tracks, grew a patch of glowing moonflowers.
Their petals shimmered with a gentle silver light.
Ivy picked one moonflower very carefully.
She climbed up and handed it to the conductor.
He placed it in the lantern at the front of the train.
The flower's glow spread soft and steady, lighting the rails ahead.
"Thank you, Ivy," the conductor hooted. "Now we can find our way."
The train began to hum, low and soothing.
Chugga-hum, chugga-hum, chugga-hum.
Ivy and Puddle climbed aboard.
Inside, the train cars were lined with soft velvet seats.
A gentle rocking began as the train rolled forward, slow and easy.
Chugga-hum, chugga-hum, chugga-hum.
Through the windows, Ivy saw the moonlit fields drift by.
A truck with a load of hay bales sat sleeping by a barn.
A little red tractor rested under an apple tree.
Everything was calm and still.
Puddle nestled into Ivy's lap.
The train swayed gently, rocking them like a cradle.
Chugga-hum, chugga-hum, chugga-hum.
The conductor dimmed the lights, one by one.
The moonflower lantern glowed soft at the front, guiding them home.
Ivy's eyes grew heavy.
The train pulled into the little blue house by the tracks.
The conductor whispered, "Safe travels, little ones."
Ivy and Puddle stepped down onto the soft grass.
Inside, Ivy's bed was waiting, warm and cozy.
She tucked Puddle beside her pillow.
Outside, the train gave one last gentle chugga-hum and rolled on into the starry night.
Ivy closed her eyes.
She could still feel the train's gentle rocking.
And she drifted off to sleep, safe and warm, dreaming of lanterns and moonflowers and the hum of the evening train.
