Long, long ago, in a quiet town where the evening bells rang soft and low, there lived a little boy named Theo.
Theo loved to watch the trains and trucks rumble gently past his window.
But tonight, the street was very still.
Not a single engine hummed.
Not a single whistle called.
Theo held his soft bear cub, Willow, close.
"Where did all the vehicles go?" he whispered.
Willow nuzzled his cheek, warm and steady.
Together, they tiptoed to the window.
Outside, the moon hung low and golden.
And there, at the end of the lane, Theo saw something wonderful…
A tiny lantern glowing on the old train tracks.
"Let's follow the light," Theo said softly.
He tucked Willow under one arm and stepped into his slippers.
The night air smelled like pine and cool grass.
The lantern flickered, warm and gentle, leading them down the path.
They walked slowly, slowly, listening.
And soon they heard it…
A soft chug-chug-chug in the distance.
Around the bend came the Goodnight Train, painted silver and blue.
Its wheels turned slowly, softly, like a lullaby.
Its chimney puffed little clouds shaped like stars.
The conductor leaned out, smiling.
"All aboard for the Sleepy Station," he said in a voice like velvet.
Theo climbed up, holding Willow close.
The seats were covered in quilts that smelled like lavender.
The windows glowed with amber light.
The train began to move, rocking gently, gently.
Chug-chug-chug.
Chug-chug-chug.
Outside, they passed trucks tucked into their garages, resting for the night.
They passed a delivery van with a blanket over its windshield.
They passed a little red caboose, its lantern swaying softly in the breeze.
"Everyone's going to sleep," Theo whispered.
Willow's eyes were already closing.
The train rocked them back and forth, back and forth.
The conductor hummed a tune with no words, just soft notes that floated like feathers.
Theo rested his head against Willow's fur.
The Goodnight Train carried them through fields of silver grass, under bridges hung with fireflies, past the Sleepy Station where all the tired trains waited, warm and still.
And as the moon rose higher, Theo felt his eyes grow heavy.
The train whispered, chug-chug-chug.
The lanterns glowed softer, softer.
Theo curled up in his quilt with Willow beside him.
Outside, the world was peaceful and kind.
Inside, everything was warm.
And together, safe and loved, they drifted off to sleep.
