Once upon a time, in a cozy barn at the edge of a quiet meadow, there lived a child named Sam and a sleepy fox called Nutmeg.
Sam couldn't quite fall asleep.
The evening felt too big and quiet.
So Sam picked up the old lantern from the barn wall…
The one that glowed with soft amber light.
Nutmeg yawned and stretched beside Sam.
"Let's visit the animals," Sam whispered.
Nutmeg's warm tail curled around Sam's hand.
Together they walked into the gentle dark.
The first animal they found was Clover the cow.
She stood in her stall, chewing softly.
Sam held up the lantern.
The soft amber light made Clover's brown eyes shine.
"The light feels like a hug," Clover said in a low, sleepy voice.
Sam smiled.
Nutmeg leaned against Sam's leg, already half-dreaming.
They moved to the next stall.
There was Barley the old sheep, nestled in sweet-smelling hay.
Sam lifted the lantern higher.
The soft amber light spread over Barley's wool like warm honey.
"The light feels like a hug," Barley murmured, closing his eyes.
Sam felt a little warmer inside.
Outside, near the fence, they found Petal the goat and Thistle the donkey.
Both were resting under the wide, starry sky.
Sam set the lantern gently on a wooden post.
The soft amber light spilled over them all.
"The light feels like a hug," Petal and Thistle said together, their voices soft as feathers.
The night air smelled of hay and clover blossoms.
A cricket sang one slow, sleepy song.
Sam sat down in the cool grass.
Nutmeg curled into Sam's lap, breathing slow and deep.
The lantern glowed beside them, steady and kind.
Sam looked at all the animals, peaceful and warm.
The big, quiet evening didn't feel so big anymore.
It felt gentle.
It felt safe.
Sam's eyes grew heavy.
The soft amber light seemed to hum a lullaby without words.
Clover, Barley, Petal, and Thistle were already asleep.
Even the stars seemed to be closing their eyes.
Sam rested a hand on Nutmeg's soft fur.
"Thank you," Sam whispered to the lantern, to the night, to the gentle friends all around.
And there, under the wide and tender sky, with the lantern glowing its amber warmth, Sam and Nutmeg drifted softly into the sweetest, coziest sleep.
