Long, long ago, in a little red barn at the edge of a meadow, there lived a girl named Ivy and her best friend, a duckling named Puddle. Every evening, when the sky turned soft and pink, Ivy had one special job. She gave every animal on the farm a goodnight kiss. Tonight, Ivy carried her little lantern, and Puddle waddled close beside her. The lantern's glow was warm and golden, like melted butter. "Ready, Puddle?" Ivy whispered. Puddle fluffed his feathers and peeped softly. First, they visited the chickens in their cozy coop. The chickens were already tucked on their roosts, eyes half-closed. Ivy tiptoed close and kissed each fluffy head. "Goodnight, sweet chickens," she said. The chickens made soft, sleepy clucks. Puddle nestled against Ivy's boots. Next, they walked to the pigpen, where the pigs were lying in a warm heap of straw. The biggest pig snuffled gently. Ivy knelt down and kissed his soft, pink snout. "One more goodnight kiss," she whispered. The pig sighed, a long, happy sigh, and closed his eyes. Puddle waddled in a slow circle, settling his feathers. Then they went to see the goats in the shed. The goats were chewing softly, their eyes drooping. Ivy kissed the smallest goat on his velvety forehead. "One more goodnight kiss," she said again. The goat leaned into her hand, warm and gentle. Puddle tucked his beak under one wing. Finally, Ivy and Puddle walked back to the barn. The cow was lying in her stall, her breath slow and steady. Ivy climbed onto the stall door and kissed the cow's soft nose. "One more goodnight kiss," Ivy said, her voice barely a whisper now. The cow's eyes drifted shut. Ivy picked up Puddle and carried him to a nest of hay in the corner. She curled up beside him, pulling a soft blanket over them both. The lantern's light flickered and dimmed. Outside, the stars began to shine. "Goodnight, Puddle," Ivy whispered. Puddle gave one tiny, sleepy peep. And together, they closed their eyes and drifted off to sleep, safe and warm in the quiet barn.
