Pip the little owl landed on Ollie's shoulder with a soft flutter.
"Ready for a walk?" Pip whispered.
Ollie nodded and stepped onto the mossy path.
The forest smelled like pine and cool night air.
Ollie's footsteps made no sound on the soft ground.
"The forest is so quiet tonight," Ollie said.
Pip ruffled his feathers. "It's *whispering* quiet," he said softly.
They walked slowly, slowly through the trees.
A sleepy rabbit peeked out from behind a stump.
"Hello," the rabbit yawned. "Are you listening too?"
"Listening to what?" Ollie asked.
The rabbit's ears twitched. "The forest is whispering goodnight."
Ollie stood very still…
And heard it.
A gentle rustle. A soft sigh in the leaves.
The forest *was* whispering.
Further down the path, a deer with soft brown eyes stood among the ferns.
She blinked slowly at Ollie.
"I hear it," Ollie whispered to Pip.
Pip's eyes were half-closed. "The forest is whispering goodnight," he murmured.
Ollie felt so peaceful.
The moon glowed warmer.
The air felt like a soft blanket.
At the end of the path was a nest of moss and feathers.
Pip hopped down and nestled in.
"This is for you," he said gently.
Ollie curled up beside Pip in the warm, cozy nest.
All around them, the forest whispered goodnight.
The rabbit. The deer. The trees.
Ollie closed their eyes and smiled.
"Goodnight, forest," Ollie whispered back.
And everything was whispering quiet.
