In a cozy cottage at the edge of the woods, there lived a child named Quilla who loved to watch the forest grow quiet. Tonight, Quilla sat by the window with their nose pressed soft against the cool glass. The sky was turning from blue to purple, like a bruise made of velvet. Outside, the trees were getting ready for sleep. Quilla whispered to themself, "I wonder what the forest animals do when the dark comes…" A little fluttery feeling danced in Quilla's belly — not quite scared, but curious and small. They wrapped their favorite blanket around their shoulders. The blanket smelled like home and warm laundry and something safe Quilla couldn't quite name. Quilla opened the cottage door very slowly. The hinges made a soft *creeeeak* sound, like the forest was yawning. The air outside was cool and gentle on Quilla's cheeks, like a silk handkerchief. Everything was so very quiet. Quilla stepped onto the path with bare feet, feeling the soft moss under their toes. The moss was like stepping on a cloud made of velvet. "Hello, forest," Quilla whispered. "Are you ready for sleep?" The trees didn't answer with words, but the leaves rustled so gently it sounded like a lullaby. Quilla walked deeper into the woods, following the path they knew by heart. The blanket trailed behind them like a long, warm shadow. After a little while, Quilla came to the Clearing of Silver Stones — a place where moonlight pooled like milk on the ground. In the middle of the clearing sat a small rabbit, perfectly still. The rabbit's fur was silver-grey, and its nose twitched once, twice, very slowly. Quilla sat down on one of the soft stones and stayed very, very quiet. The rabbit looked at Quilla with eyes like dark berries. "Hello," Quilla said in the gentlest voice they could make. "Are you getting ready for sleep too?" The rabbit's ears relaxed. It hopped — not away, but closer — and sat beside Quilla on the stone. Its fur was warm when Quilla reached out one hand to touch it. "You're so soft," Quilla whispered. "Softer than anything." The rabbit made a tiny sound, almost like a hum, and Quilla felt it rumble under their fingers. Soon, a fox emerged from between two birch trees, moving like smoke through the shadows. The fox was russet-colored, with a tail like a brush dipped in fire. But the fox was moving slowly, sleepily, the way things move when they are very, very tired. The fox lay down near Quilla and the rabbit without any worry at all. Quilla's breath became soft and even. They felt the little fluttery feeling in their belly fade away, replaced by something warm and still. "The softest part of night is here," Quilla said to the rabbit and the fox. "The softest part of night is here." A hedgehog appeared at the edge of the clearing, curled into a tiny ball. Then a deer, stepping so carefully that its hooves made no sound at all. Then a sleepy owl in the low branch above, blinking slow, slow, slow. All of them were gathering, drawn to the quiet and the softness and to Quilla sitting in the middle like the heart of something gentle. Quilla drew the blanket closer and opened one corner of it. "Come," they whispered. "The softest part of night is here, and we can be soft together." The rabbit nestled against Quilla's leg. The fox curled into a crescent moon shape nearby. The hedgehog rolled a little closer, and the deer lay down with a soft sigh that sounded like wind through tall grass. The owl closed its eyes from its branch. Quilla's own eyes grew heavy. The moonlight was so gentle, so pale and kind. The clearing smelled like earth and growing things and sleep. Quilla's head tilted back against the trunk of an old oak tree that had grown there for a hundred years. "The softest part of night is here," Quilla murmured one more time, and their voice was barely a breath. All around them, the forest breathed too. In, and out. In, and out. The stars came out one by one, like someone was lighting candles in the sky. Quilla's fingers rested on the rabbit's warm fur. The blanket wrapped around them all like a hug. And as the night grew deeper and softer still, Quilla's eyes closed. Their breathing matched the breathing of the forest. The rabbit slept. The fox slept. The hedgehog, the deer, the owl, and all the gentle creatures of the wood slept. And Quilla slept too, safe in the softest part of night, surrounded by warmth and kindness and the quiet love of the forest.
