In a soft and sleepy cottage at the edge of the meadow, there lived a child named Quilla who loved to watch the sky.
Every evening, as the light turned golden and warm, Quilla would climb the gentle wooden steps to the roof garden.
The roof was small and safe, with soft cushions scattered like clouds on the weathered boards.
Quilla settled onto their favourite cushion and looked up.
The sky was beginning to change.
Pink and orange light stretched across the clouds like paint swirled into cream.
"Hello, sky," Quilla whispered softly.
And the sky seemed to whisper back.
---
Tonight, the clouds were gathering in a way Quilla had never quite seen before.
They were piling up like pillows, soft and rounded, one on top of another.
Quilla felt a gentle, wondering feeling in their chest.
Were the clouds stacking themselves?
Or were they dreaming?
A warm breeze touched Quilla's cheek, and it felt like a tender hand.
The clouds began to glow from inside, as if someone had lit a lamp behind them.
Quilla watched, very still and very quiet.
The clouds glowed softer and softer, like the inside of a seashell.
"The clouds are building a garden," Quilla said aloud, though there was no one to hear.
---
Then, in the space between one breath and the next, Quilla noticed something new.
A thread of colour began to arc across the sky—so faint at first that Quilla wasn't sure it was really there.
Quilla blinked.
The colour grew gentle and true: a ribbon of violet and rose and pale gold, curving like a bridge made of light.
It was a rainbow, soft and slow, appearing in the dusky sky.
Quilla had never seen a rainbow at this hour before.
It seemed impossible and real all at once.
A fluttery, peaceful feeling filled Quilla's belly.
The clouds around the rainbow began to shift and settle, like they were cradling it.
Quilla reached out one hand toward the light, though they were far too far away to touch it.
"The clouds are building a garden," Quilla whispered again, "and the rainbow is part of it."
---
As Quilla watched, more colours began to thread through the clouds.
Pale blue and soft green, like water reflecting sky.
Cream and silver where the light caught the edges of the piled-up clouds.
The whole roof garden seemed to glow with borrowed colour.
Quilla's breathing became slow and deep.
Each breath felt warm and easy.
The cushion beneath them felt softer than ever before, as if it were also made of cloud.
Quilla wondered if they might sink into it gently, like sinking into sleep itself.
"The clouds are building a garden," Quilla murmured, the words becoming drowsy, "and I am sitting in it."
---
The rainbow began to fade, very slowly, the way a sigh fades into quiet.
But it didn't disappear all at once.
Instead, it seemed to melt into the clouds themselves, colouring them from within.
The clouds turned softer shades of lavender and pearl and pale gold.
They looked less like clouds now and more like a blanket, folded and arranged just right.
Quilla's eyes grew heavy.
The sky was becoming dimmer, gentler, more like a lullaby than a sight.
---
A small sound came from somewhere below—a door closing softly, a voice calling out with love.
It was Quilla's grown-up, calling them in for the night.
But Quilla didn't move yet.
They sat a moment longer, wrapped in the last of the coloured light.
The breeze had stopped now.
Everything was very still.
The clouds hung in the sky like a picture in a frame, perfect and peaceful.
Quilla felt their eyes closing, opening, closing again.
The garden of clouds had done its work.
---
Quilla stood slowly, their legs a little sleepy, and made their way down the wooden steps.
Each step felt soft beneath their feet.
The cottage was warm inside, and it smelled of lavender and something sweet.
Their grown-up was waiting with a gentle smile.
"Did you have a good time in the sky?" they asked softly.
Quilla nodded, still half in the dream of the cloud garden.
"The clouds were building," Quilla said, their voice like a feather, "and the rainbow was helping."
Their grown-up smiled and led Quilla to bed.
---
The bed was already turned down, the quilt folded back like an invitation.
Quilla climbed in, and the sheets felt cool and kind against their skin.
Their grown-up tucked the quilt up around them, gentle and close.
"Sleep well," their grown-up whispered.
Quilla closed their eyes.
In the darkness behind their eyes, Quilla could still see the soft colours.
The pale blue and rose and lavender, all mixed together like a dream made of sky.
The clouds were still building their garden somewhere beyond the window, Quilla knew.
And Quilla was safe and warm inside, drifting down, down, down into the softest sleep.
The rainbow had painted the clouds with kindness, and now it was painting Quilla's dreams.
Everything was still.
Everything was gentle.
Everything was at peace.
