Coral floated on her back in the warm, shallow water.
The sun was setting, turning the ocean soft and gold.
Her friend Splash the dolphin swam in slow circles around her.
"The ocean is getting sleepy," Coral whispered.
Splash clicked softly.
He nudged Coral's hand with his smooth, gentle nose.
Together they watched the light fade from bright to gentle blue.
But then Coral noticed something.
The little fish who usually sang their evening song were quiet.
The water felt too still, too silent.
"Where is the sleepy sea song?" Coral wondered.
Splash dove down and came back up with a shimmer of bubbles.
He seemed to know something.
Coral took a breath and followed him deeper, just a little.
The water grew cooler and softer around them.
Coral saw a tiny seahorse hiding behind a swaying piece of kelp.
The seahorse looked shy.
"Hello," Coral said gently. "Are you the one who sings?"
The seahorse nodded, very small.
"I forgot how," she whispered.
Coral reached out slowly.
She hummed a soft, simple tune her mama always sang.
Just three notes, over and over.
Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm…
The seahorse listened.
Then, very quietly, she began to hum too.
Her voice was like tiny bells underwater.
Other fish heard the song.
They swam closer, adding their own soft sounds.
A turtle hummed low and slow.
The jellyfish pulsed in rhythm, glowing faint and warm.
"The ocean is getting sleepy," Coral sang softly.
The whole sea seemed to sigh and settle.
Splash carried Coral back up to the surface.
The stars were coming out now, one by one.
Coral floated on her back again.
Splash stayed right beside her, his fin touching her hand.
The sleepy sea song drifted up from below, soft as a lullaby.
"Thank you," the little seahorse called from far away.
Coral smiled.
Her eyes felt heavy and warm.
The ocean rocked her gently, gently.
"The ocean is getting sleepy," she whispered one last time.
And so was she.
Splash hummed his own dolphin song, low and sweet.
Coral closed her eyes.
The stars watched over them both.
The whole sea was singing now.
And Coral, safe and warm and loved, drifted off to sleep.
