In a cozy little cottage at the edge of the woods, there lived a child named Quilla who loved to listen to soft sounds. Every evening, Quilla would sit by their window and hear the gentlest hum, like a song the wind was singing just for them. They wondered where the hum came from. Was it from the trees? Was it from the stars? Quilla wanted to find out. One twilight evening, when the sky turned purple and pink, Quilla wrapped their warmest blanket around their shoulders like a cloak. They stepped outside into the cool, gentle air. The hum was louder now, and it seemed to be coming from the direction of the silver meadow beyond the trees. Quilla took a small step forward, then another. The grass felt soft under their feet, like walking on a cloud. "Where are you?" Quilla whispered very softly. The hum answered, rising and falling like a lullaby. Quilla felt a little unsure in their tummy, the kind of flutter you get when something new is about to happen. But they kept walking, following the sound deeper into the woods. The trees here were old and kind, their branches reaching down like gentle arms. Moonlight came through the leaves in silver stripes. Quilla could see their own breath, soft and misty. "I'm looking for the starlight hum," Quilla called out, in the smallest, bravest voice. The hum grew warmer, like it was welcoming them. At last, Quilla came to a clearing they had never seen before. In the middle of the clearing stood an enormous willow tree with branches that hung all the way to the ground, like a curtain of silver ribbons. And underneath the branches, glowing with the softest golden light, was something magical. It was a little creature made entirely of starlight and song. It had no shape Quilla could quite name — sometimes it looked like a bird, sometimes like a swirl of wind, sometimes like a handful of stars. The creature hummed, and the hum was so gentle and so kind that Quilla felt their worry melt away like snow in spring. "Hello," Quilla said softly. The creature's light grew brighter, and it hummed the starlight hum. "You came," the creature seemed to say, though it had no voice — only the hum. Quilla understood, the way you understand things in dreams. "I heard you singing," Quilla said. "And I wanted to find you." The starlight creature floated closer, and Quilla saw that the hum was coming from deep inside its light, like a heartbeat made of music. "I hum so that lonely children will know they are not alone," the creature hummed. "I sing so that worried hearts will remember they are safe." Quilla felt warm all over, like they had just been wrapped in the softest hug. "Will you stay?" Quilla asked. "I'm so glad you found me," the creature answered in hums and light. The creature began to move in a slow, spiraling dance, and as it danced, more and more starlight fell from above — not cold like snow, but warm and gentle, like being tucked under a blanket. The starlight collected on the grass and turned into soft, glowing flowers that smelled like honey and sleep. Quilla sat down in the meadow of starlight flowers, and the creature circled around them, still humming. The hum seemed to wrap around Quilla like a warm cloak. "The starlight hum will always be with you now," the creature whispered in its gentle song. "Whenever you feel unsure or lonely, you can listen for it, and you will know that kindness is near." Quilla's eyes grew heavy and warm. The starlight hum continued, so soft and so soothing. Quilla leaned back onto the soft grass and looked up at the stars. The creature's light began to fade gently, not disappearing, but becoming part of the starlight around them. The hum grew quieter and quieter, becoming almost a memory, almost a dream. Quilla could feel their blanket still wrapped around their shoulders. They could feel the cool night air on their face. But it all felt safe now, and warm, and full of kindness. The starlight flowers glowed softly all around them, and the creature's hum became the hum of the whole forest — the trees, the wind, the stars themselves, all singing a lullaby together. Quilla's breathing slowed to match the rhythm of the hum. Their eyes closed like petals folding. And there, in the clearing under the willow tree, surrounded by starlight and song, Quilla drifted gently into the most peaceful sleep. The starlight hum continued all through the night, keeping watch over them, a gentle song of kindness and safety and rest.
