In a cozy little cottage at the edge of the sea, there lived a child named Quilla. Quilla loved the ocean very much. Every evening, they would walk down to the shore before bedtime. The sand felt warm and soft under their feet. The waves made a gentle, whooshing sound. Tonight, Quilla walked slowly along the beach, listening to the water. The sky was turning pink and purple. Quilla felt curious and peaceful. They wanted to find something special before sleep. Something to bring home and hold close through the night. --- As Quilla walked, they spotted something glimmering in a shallow pool of water. It was a starfish, stuck between two rocks. The starfish was orange and had five long arms. It couldn't reach the deeper water where it belonged. Quilla knelt down and looked at the starfish carefully. "Hello, little starfish," Quilla whispered softly. The starfish seemed to shimmer in the fading light. Quilla felt a wobbly, worried feeling in their tummy. The starfish needed help, and Quilla wanted to help. But the rocks looked tricky to move. --- Quilla took a deep breath and reached toward the rocks. They were slippery and smooth from the sea. Quilla tried to wiggle the first rock gently. It didn't budge. Quilla tried again, a little braver this time. The rock shifted just a tiny bit. "I can do this," Quilla said softly to themselves. They pushed and wiggled with their small, gentle hands. The rock began to roll slowly away. --- The starfish still couldn't reach the water. Quilla looked at the second rock. This one was smaller, but it was wedged tight. Quilla's hands were wet and a little cold now. But they didn't give up. They worked carefully, talking to the starfish the whole time. "I'm helping you," Quilla whispered. "You'll be safe soon, little starfish." The second rock finally rolled away. --- Now the starfish had a clear path to the deeper water. But it wasn't moving. Quilla looked worried again. "Are you okay?" Quilla asked the starfish gently. Then Quilla understood. The starfish was tired, just like Quilla felt at bedtime. It needed help to find its way home. Quilla thought of something kind to do. --- Quilla cupped their hands and scooped up some cool seawater. Very carefully, they made a path of water from the starfish to the deeper pool. It was like making a wet bridge. The starfish slowly began to move. One arm reached out. Then another. The starfish inched along the wet path Quilla had made. "There you go, little starfish," Quilla whispered. "I'm helping you find your way home." --- The starfish reached the deeper water and began to swim. It moved in slow, graceful circles. Then it stopped and seemed to glow brighter in the moonlight. Quilla felt warm and sleepy inside their chest. The starfish was safe. Quilla had been brave and kind. The ocean felt calmer now. --- Quilla stood up and looked at the sky. The stars were beginning to twinkle. The beach was growing quieter. Everything smelled like salt and sand and home. Quilla walked back toward the cottage, feeling happy and tired. Their feet made soft prints in the sand. The cottage light glowed warm and welcoming. --- Inside, Quilla's caregiver was waiting with warm milk and a soft blanket. "Did you have a good adventure?" they asked gently. "I helped a starfish find its way home," Quilla said, yawning. "I was brave and kind, and the starfish was safe." Quilla's caregiver smiled and wrapped the blanket around them. It felt like being hugged by the whole world. --- Quilla sat by the window with their warm milk. They could see the ocean in the darkness. The moonlight made a silver path across the water. Somewhere out there, the starfish was resting too. Quilla imagined the starfish in its home, safe and sound. They imagined it sleeping, just like they would soon. --- As Quilla's eyes grew heavier and heavier, they thought about the starfish. They thought about the rocks they had moved. They thought about the path of water they had made. They had done something brave and good. And now everything was calm and safe. --- Quilla finished their milk and snuggled deeper into the blanket. Their caregiver read a soft, quiet story. But Quilla's eyes were already closing. The words sounded like waves, gentle and far away. Quilla felt so very sleepy now. --- As Quilla drifted off to sleep, they dreamed of the starfish. In the dream, the starfish glowed softly. It had found its family, other starfish just like it. They all rested together on the ocean floor. The water around them shimmered with silver light. It was peaceful and safe and warm. --- Quilla's breathing became slow and even. Their hand relaxed, still holding a corner of the blanket. A small, happy smile rested on their face. The cottage was quiet except for the distant sound of the sea. Outside, the starfish slept in the deep, cool water. Both Quilla and their new friend were home. Both were safe. Both were loved. And both were drifting, gently, into the softest sleep.
