And every night, a little owl named Pip flew softly beside them.
"Ready, Pip?" Ollie whispered.
Pip blinked once, which meant yes.
The evening air smelled like hay and clover.
Ollie pushed open the barn door.
It creaked, just a little.
Inside, the barn was warm and golden!
The lantern made gentle shadows dance on the walls.
"Hello, everyone," Ollie said softly.
The cow, Clover, looked up from her stall and gave a low, friendly moo.
Ollie reached out and touched Clover's soft nose.

The chickens were still awake, rustling in their roost.
"Why aren't you sleepy?" Ollie wondered.

Then they had an idea.

The warm light spread across the barn like a blanket.
Ollie began to hum, very quietly.
It was the same tune their grandmother hummed at bedtime.
Clover's eyes grew heavy.
The chickens tucked their heads under their wings, one by one.
Even the old horse, Hazel, let out a long, sleepy breath.
The lantern glowed softly in Ollie's hand.
Pip fluttered down and perched on Ollie's shoulder.
"There," Ollie whispered. "Now everyone's cozy."
They set the lantern on a hook by the door.
Its glow was soft and golden, like a little moon.
Ollie stood there for a moment, listening.
The barn was full of warm, gentle breathing.
Outside, the stars were beginning to appear.
Ollie and Pip walked back across the meadow.
The grass was cool under Ollie's bare feet.
"Goodnight, barn," Ollie said, looking back.
Could the animals hear them?
Inside the farmhouse, Ollie's own bed was waiting.
They climbed in, and Pip settled on the windowsill nearby.
Through the window, Ollie could still see the lantern's tiny light.
It glowed softly in the barn, keeping watch.
