Once upon a time, a little girl named Dorothy lived on a quiet farm with her kind Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.
She had a sweet little dog named Toto, who was her very best friend.
One day, a big wind came…
It lifted Dorothy's little house right up into the sky.
Dorothy held Toto close and felt the house gently rocking like a cradle.
After a while, the house came down so softly, like a feather landing on a pillow.
Dorothy opened the door and saw the most beautiful place she had ever seen.
There were flowers everywhere, in every color of the rainbow.
"Where are we, Toto?" she whispered.
Some kind little people came to meet her.
They told her this was a magical land, far from home.
"How do I get back to my aunt and uncle?" Dorothy asked softly.
"The wise Wizard in the Emerald City can help you," they said.
They gave her a pair of sparkling silver shoes to wear on her journey.
Dorothy started down a yellow brick road that wound through gentle hills.
The road was smooth and easy under her feet.
As she walked, she met a friendly Scarecrow standing in a field.
"I wish I could think of clever things," the Scarecrow said.
"Come with me," Dorothy said kindly. "Maybe the Wizard can help you too."
A little further on, they found a Tin Woodman standing very still.
"I wish I could feel things in my heart," he said quietly.
Dorothy smiled. "Walk with us. The Wizard might help you as well."
The Tin Woodman joined them, and they all walked together.
Soon they met a big Lion with a soft, gentle face.
"I wish I felt brave inside," the Lion whispered shyly.
"You can come too," Dorothy said, taking his paw.
Now there were four friends walking down the yellow brick road together.
They walked through meadows full of sleepy poppies…
The flowers smelled so sweet and made them yawn.
They helped each other stay awake and keep walking.
Soon they were through the flowers and feeling better.
At last, they saw a beautiful green city sparkling in the distance.
Everything there was the softest, prettiest green.
The Wizard lived in a palace in the very center.
When they met him, he was kind but a little shy.
"I'm not really a wizard," he admitted softly. "I'm just a man who came here in a balloon, long ago."
But he smiled at each of them warmly.
"Scarecrow, you've been thinking of clever ideas all along," he said.
"Tin Woodman, your kind heart has been there the whole time."
"And Lion, you've been brave every step of the way."
Each friend felt happy, realizing what had been inside them all along.
Then the Wizard looked at Dorothy.
"Your silver shoes are magic," he told her gently. "They can take you home."
Dorothy hugged each of her friends goodbye.
She promised to remember them always.
She closed her eyes and tapped her heels together three times.
"Take me home," she whispered.
In a blink, she was back on her farm.
Aunt Em and Uncle Henry were so happy to see her.
Toto wagged his tail and licked her face.
Dorothy told them all about her faraway friends…
The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the gentle Lion.
But she was so glad to be home, safe and sound.
That night, Dorothy climbed into her own cozy bed.
Toto curled up beside her, warm and soft.
She looked out her window at the stars twinkling like the Emerald City.
She smiled, remembering her adventure.
And knowing that home was the most wonderful place of all…
She closed her eyes.
Her breathing grew slow and peaceful.
And she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of yellow brick roads and faraway friends.
