Once upon a time, in a castle soft with candlelight, there lived twelve princesses. They shared a big, cozy room with twelve little beds all in a row. Every night, their father the king tucked them in and kissed them goodnight. He closed the door gently and locked it with a soft click. But every morning, something curious happened… The princesses' dancing slippers were worn right through, as if they had danced all night long. The king wondered and wondered. "Where do my daughters go?" he asked softly. He invited visitors to stay and solve the mystery. Each one sat outside the princesses' door to watch and listen. But each one fell fast asleep and heard nothing at all. Then one day, a kind young traveler came to the castle. An old woman in the forest had given him a gentle secret. "Don't drink what they offer you," she whispered, "and wear this cloak to stay hidden." That night, the oldest princess brought him a cup of warm milk. He pretended to sip, but didn't drink a drop. Soon he closed his eyes and breathed slowly, as if fast asleep. The princesses put on their prettiest gowns, soft as moonlight. They opened a secret door in the floor… Down, down, down went a staircase, glowing with starlight. The traveler wrapped the magic cloak around himself and followed, quiet as a dream. They walked through a forest where the leaves were made of silver and whispered softly. Then through trees with golden leaves that chimed like little bells. Then trees with leaves of diamonds that sparkled gently. At last they came to a lake that shimmered in the moonlight. Twelve little boats waited there, rocking softly on the water. Twelve kind princes stood by the boats and smiled. Each princess stepped into a boat, and the traveler slipped into the last one, invisible and light. They floated across the water, gentle as a lullaby. On the other side stood a beautiful castle made of clouds and starlight. Inside, soft music played, sweet and slow. The princesses and princes danced together, swaying like flowers in a breeze. They danced and twirled until their slippers were worn and soft. The traveler watched it all, quiet and hidden. When the dancing was done, everyone yawned. The princesses sailed back across the lake, sleepy and happy. They climbed the glowing stairs and slipped into their beds. The next morning, the traveler told the king everything he had seen. The king smiled and nodded. "So that's where they go," he said gently. The princesses were not in trouble. They promised to invite their father to visit the magical castle too. And from then on, they all danced together under the stars… Until everyone grew sleepy and floated home. The princesses curled up in their cozy beds. The castle grew quiet and still. And everyone drifted off to the softest, sweetest dreams.
