The town mouse looked around at the quiet fields and smiled.
"How peaceful it is here," she said softly.
The country mouse shared her supper of wheat and barley.
They nibbled together as the sun set, painting the sky pink and gold.
The town mouse whispered, "Would you like to see where I live?"
So the little country mouse said yes, and off they went.
The town had bright lights and busy streets.
The town mouse's home was behind a wall in a grand house.
"Look at all this!" said the town mouse.
There were crumbs of cake and bits of cheese on a big table.
But just as they began to nibble, they heard footsteps.
"Quick, hide," whispered the town mouse.
They scurried into a crack in the wall and waited, very still.
When it was quiet again, they crept back out.
But soon there were more sounds, more footsteps, more hiding.
The little country mouse felt tired.
"Your home has wonderful treats," she said gently.
"But I miss the quiet fields and my cozy bed."
The town mouse understood and gave her cousin a soft hug.
The country mouse traveled home under the stars.
She curled up in her nest of grass beneath the apple tree.
The moon shone softly through the leaves.
Everything was safe and still and calm.
She closed her eyes, warm and happy.
And she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of golden fields and gentle breezes.
