Once upon a time, in a faraway land where the grass grew soft as clouds, there lived a gentle child named Max.
Max had a very special friend.
Her name was Bubbles, and she was a baby seal with silver whiskers and eyes like smooth grey stones.
Every evening, when the sky turned the colour of lavender honey, Max and Bubbles would walk together to the edge of the Moonshell Garden.
The garden was a magical place.
Flowers there only opened at twilight.
And they hummed the softest songs!
"Can you hear them, Bubbles?" Max whispered.
Bubbles wiggled her nose and made a quiet little sound, like a sigh mixed with a chirp.
Tonight, something was different.
The garden gate, woven from silver willow branches, was closed.
Max had never seen it closed before.
They reached out and touched the smooth wood.
It felt warm, like a mug of milk with honey.
How do we get in?
Bubbles shuffled closer.
She pressed her whiskery nose against Max's hand.
And Max noticed something they hadn't seen before.
A tiny moonshell tucked into the gatepost, glowing pale blue!
Max lifted the shell gently.
It was no bigger than a walnut.
It felt like holding a whisper.
"Maybe this is the key," Max said softly.
They held the shell up to the gate.
The willow branches shivered.
They unwound themselves, slow as a yawn.
The gate swung open without a sound.
"We did it, Bubbles."
The baby seal clapped her flippers together, just once, very quietly.
Inside the garden, the air smelled of warm grass and something sweet Max couldn't quite name.
The flowers were opening now.
Their petals unfolded like tiny hands stretching after a nap.
Each one hummed its own sleepy note.
All together, they sounded like a lullaby made of moonlight.
Max and Bubbles walked the winding path between the flowerbeds.
The petals brushed against Max's fingers.
They felt softer than anything in the world.
Bubbles shuffled along beside them.
Her flippers made the gentlest pat-pat-pat on the mossy stones.
At the centre of the garden stood a tree Max had never noticed before.
Its branches were hung with lanterns that glowed like captured stars.
Beneath the tree was a nest woven from silver grass.
Just big enough for a child and a baby seal.
"Look, Bubbles," Max whispered.
It's been waiting for us.
They climbed into the nest together.
It was the cosiest thing Max had ever felt, like being held in the world's warmest hug.
Bubbles curled up against Max's side, her whiskers tickling their arm.
Above them, the lanterns swayed in a breeze Max couldn't feel.
Their light grew softer and softer.
Like candles being turned down low.
The flowers hummed their lullaby.
The moonshell in Max's hand glowed a little brighter, then a little dimmer, like a tiny heartbeat.
Max looked up at the branches.
Between the leaves, they could see the first stars beginning to appear.
All those stars, lighting up one by one.
It's been waiting for us.
Max's eyes grew heavy.
Bubbles was already asleep.
Her breathing slow and even.
Her flippers tucked close.
The garden hummed.
The lanterns dimmed.
The moonshell's glow faded to the softest blue.
Max let their eyes close.
The nest held them gently.
The flowers sang them down into dreams.
