On a quiet winter evening, a little girl walked through the snowy streets.
She carried a small basket of matches to sell.
The snowflakes drifted down like soft feathers all around her.
She called out gently, "Matches for sale…"
But everyone had already gone home to their warm houses.
The street grew quieter and quieter.
The little girl found a cozy corner between two buildings.
She sat down on her coat and tucked her cold hands into her pockets.
"Perhaps I'll light just one match to warm my fingers," she whispered.
She struck a match, and it glowed like a tiny golden star.
In the warm light, she imagined a beautiful stove with a crackling fire.
She could almost feel its warmth wrapping around her like a hug.
The match flickered out, but she smiled at the lovely thought.
"One more," she said softly.
The second match glowed even brighter.
This time she saw a table filled with warm bread and soup and apple pie.
Her grandmother stood there, smiling the kindest smile.
"Grandmother…" the little girl whispered.
The match grew dim, but the feeling of love stayed.
She lit another match, then another.
Each one showed her something beautiful and warm.
She saw twinkling stars that seemed to dance just for her.
She saw her grandmother again, with arms open wide.
"Stay with me, little one," her grandmother said gently.
The little girl felt herself lifted up in the softest, warmest hug.
All the cold melted away.
She floated up and up, wrapped in her grandmother's love.
They drifted together through clouds soft as cotton.
Her grandmother sang a lullaby, sweet and low.
They came to a little cottage made of starlight.
Inside was a bed piled high with the fluffiest quilts.
"You'll never be cold again," Grandmother whispered.
She tucked the little girl into the warm bed.
The quilts smelled like cinnamon and honey.
Through the window, she could see the stars twinkling peacefully.
"Sleep now, my dear one," Grandmother said, stroking her hair.
The little girl yawned and snuggled deeper into the covers.
Outside, the snow fell gently on the quiet street.
But the little girl was already dreaming.
She dreamed of warm fires and full tables.
She dreamed of her grandmother's arms around her.
She dreamed of love that would last forever.
And in that cozy cottage made of starlight, wrapped in the softest quilts, held safe in her grandmother's love…
The little match girl drifted into the most peaceful sleep.
Where she was warm.
And safe.
And loved.
Always.
