Once upon a time, a kind mother planted a juniper tree in her garden. She wished and wished for a baby to love. One winter morning, she saw a bright red bird in the snowy branches. And her wish came true… She had a sweet baby boy with rosy cheeks. The baby grew strong and happy, playing beneath the juniper tree every day. His father loved him so. Later, a new mother came to live with them, and she had a daughter with golden hair. The little girl loved her new brother very much. One afternoon, the boy was playing near a big wooden chest in the kitchen. His stepmother was feeling cross that day. When he peeked inside the chest, the heavy lid came down — bump! — on his head. Oh, how it startled everyone! But the kind juniper tree had magic in its branches. The tree began to glow with a soft, gentle light. A beautiful bird flew out from the branches, singing the sweetest song. The bird had bright feathers and kind, knowing eyes. It flew to the village and sang its magical song. A toymaker heard the song and smiled. "What a lovely bird," he said softly. He gave the bird a little wooden flute. A shoemaker heard the song too. "How beautiful," she whispered. She gave the bird tiny golden slippers. The bird flew back home, still singing. The little sister heard the song first. She clapped her hands with joy. "Come see the beautiful bird!" she called. The father came outside and the bird dropped the golden slippers at his feet. "How wonderful," he said gently. The stepmother came out too, feeling sorry for being cross. The bird's song made her heart feel lighter. She smiled a real, warm smile. Then the bird flew down to the juniper tree. There was a shimmer of silver light… And there stood the little boy, safe and sound, laughing beneath the branches. His sister hugged him tight. His father lifted him up high. Even his stepmother hugged them all, her heart changed by the magic. From that day on, they were a happy family. They had picnics under the juniper tree. The stepmother was never cross again. She baked apple cakes and told gentle stories. The children played together every afternoon. The father sang them soft songs at bedtime. And the juniper tree watched over them all, its branches swaying in the warm breeze. Sometimes a bright red bird would visit and sing the sweetest lullaby. The little boy and his sister would lie in the soft grass… Looking up through the green leaves at the golden sunlight… Feeling safe and loved and peaceful… As the tree whispered them softly, softly to sleep.
