Once upon a time, a kind old woman baked a gingerbread man.
She gave him two raisin eyes and a sweet smile.
When she opened the oven door, the little gingerbread man hopped right out.
"I'm going to see the world!" he said happily.
And off he ran, his little legs going fast.
The old woman called softly, "Wait, little one!"
But the gingerbread man wanted to explore.
He ran past a gentle cow in a meadow.
"Hello there!" mooed the cow in a friendly way.
But the gingerbread man kept running, giggling as he went.
He ran past a sleepy horse by a fence.
"Good evening," nickered the horse with a yawn.
The gingerbread man waved and hurried on.
Soon he came to a quiet stream.
The water sparkled softly in the afternoon light.
A kind fox was resting by the water.
"I can help you cross," the fox said gently.
The gingerbread man climbed onto the fox's tail.
They started across the calm, shallow water.
"Climb to my back," said the fox, "so you stay dry."
The gingerbread man climbed up.
"Now to my head," the fox said softly.
The gingerbread man climbed to the very top.
When they reached the other side, something magical happened.
The fox set him down ever so gently on the soft grass.
"This is a perfect spot to rest," whispered the fox.
The gingerbread man looked around at the peaceful meadow.
Fireflies were just beginning to glow.
The old woman appeared on the path, walking slowly.
"There you are, little one," she said with a warm smile.
"I've seen the whole wide world," yawned the gingerbread man.
"And now I'm ready to go home."
The old woman picked him up carefully.
She carried him back to the cozy cottage.
She tucked him into a tiny basket lined with soft cloth.
The gingerbread man closed his raisin eyes.
He felt safe and loved and very, very sleepy.
And he drifted off to dream of his gentle adventure…
