Once there was a kind old shoemaker who lived in a little shop.
He had just enough leather left to make one last pair of shoes.
He cut the leather carefully and laid the pieces on his workbench.
Then he yawned and went upstairs to sleep.
In the morning, he came down and rubbed his eyes.
There on the bench sat the most beautiful shoes he had ever seen!
Tiny, perfect stitches… all finished while he slept.
"How wonderful," he whispered.
A customer came in and smiled at the lovely shoes.
She bought them right away.
Now the shoemaker had enough money for more leather.
That night, he cut out two pairs of shoes and left them on the bench.
He climbed the stairs and drifted off to sleep.
In the morning… four perfect shoes were waiting!
Soft and beautiful, every stitch just right.
This happened again and again.
The shoemaker grew curious.
"Tonight," he said softly to his wife, "let's stay up and see."
They hid behind a curtain as the moon rose high.
At midnight, two tiny elves tiptoed in.
They wore raggedy little clothes but had the brightest smiles.
The elves hopped onto the bench and began to work.
Their tiny fingers stitched and sewed, humming all the while.
When the shoes were done, they danced a happy jig and disappeared.
"Those dear little elves," whispered the shoemaker's wife.
"Let's make them something warm to wear."
They sewed two tiny shirts, two tiny coats, and two tiny pairs of pants.
That night, they left the clothes on the bench.
The elves returned at midnight.
They found the gifts and gasped with joy.
They put on their new clothes and twirled and laughed.
Then they waved goodbye and danced out into the starry night.
The shoemaker smiled.
He never saw the elves again…
But his shop stayed warm and busy.
And every night, he thought of them with love.
Now the moon is high.
