Once upon a time, a little crow flew across a sunny meadow.
She had been flying all morning long.
Her wings felt tired…
Her throat felt very dry.
"I need a drink of water," she said softly to herself.
She looked down at the ground below.
There, sitting in the soft grass, was a tall pitcher.
The little crow flew down and landed gently beside it.
She peeked inside the pitcher.
There was water at the bottom… but it was too far down to reach.
She stretched her beak as far as she could.
But the water was still too far away.
"Oh dear," she whispered. "What shall I do?"
The little crow sat down in the warm grass to think.
She looked around the meadow.
There were smooth pebbles scattered everywhere, shining in the sunlight.
Then she had a wonderful idea.
She picked up one small pebble in her beak.
She dropped it gently into the pitcher.
Plink.
The water rose up just a tiny bit.
"I think this might work," she said softly.
She picked up another pebble.
Plink.
And another.
Plink.
One by one, she dropped the smooth pebbles in.
The water rose higher…
And higher…
Until at last, it reached the top of the pitcher.
The little crow took a long, cool drink.
"Ahhhh," she sighed happily.
Her throat felt better.
Her wings felt rested.
The warm sun made her feel cozy and sleepy.
She tucked her head under her soft wing.
And there in the peaceful meadow, beside the pitcher and the pebbles, the clever little crow settled down for a gentle nap.
The grass was soft beneath her.
The breeze was warm and sweet.
And she dreamed happy dreams… of sunny days and cool water… and being safe and loved.
