Once upon a time, on a sunny summer day, a little grasshopper sat on a warm leaf. He played his tiny fiddle and hummed a happy tune. The golden sunshine felt so nice and warm… Nearby, a small ant walked by, carrying a single seed. She was taking it home to her cozy underground nest. The grasshopper waved and called softly, "Come play with me!" "I'm gathering food for winter," the ant said gently. "Winter will be cold and quiet, and I want to be ready." The grasshopper smiled and played another song. All through the long, lazy summer, the grasshopper rested in the shade. He watched clouds drift by like soft cotton. He napped on flower petals and sang to the butterflies… The little ant kept walking back and forth, back and forth. One seed at a time, she filled her cupboard. She worked slowly and happily, humming as she went. Then autumn came, with leaves of red and gold. The air grew cooler and the days grew shorter. The grasshopper began to feel a little chilly… He hopped to the ant's door and knocked very softly. "I'm cold," he whispered. "And I'm hungry too." The ant opened her door wide and smiled. "Come inside, friend," she said warmly. "There's plenty of room and plenty to share." The grasshopper hopped in, and it was so cozy and warm. They sat together by her little fireplace. The ant brought out seeds and crumbs and sweet honey. They shared a quiet supper, side by side… Outside, soft snow began to fall. But inside, the two friends were safe and full and warm. The grasshopper yawned and curled up on a soft cushion. "Thank you," he whispered sleepily. The ant tucked a tiny blanket around him. And together they drifted off to sleep, dreaming of spring…
