In a cozy little cottage at the edge of the woods, Sam and their friend Nutmeg were getting ready for bed.
Nutmeg was a fox with soft orange fur and a sleepy, droopy tail.
They both loved the quiet forest at night.
Sam looked out the window.
The moon was glowing softly through the trees.
"Let's say goodnight to the forest," Sam whispered.
Nutmeg yawned and nodded.
Sam put on their warm slippers.
Nutmeg stretched and followed close behind.
They stepped outside into the cool, gentle air.
The forest smelled like pine needles and damp earth.
Everything was soft and still.
Sam carried a tiny glowing lantern.
Its warm light made the shadows dance.
"The forest is so sleepy," Sam said softly.
They walked slowly down the mossy path.
Their footsteps made quiet crunching sounds.
Nutmeg's paws padded softly beside them.
Under a low branch, they found a little rabbit.
The rabbit was curled up in a nest of leaves.
"Goodnight, rabbit," Sam whispered.
The rabbit wiggled its nose and closed its eyes.
The forest is so sleepy.
Sam and Nutmeg walked a bit farther.
They found a hedgehog rolling into a ball.
The hedgehog's spines looked soft in the lantern light.
"Goodnight, hedgehog," Sam said gently.
The hedgehog gave a tiny snuffling sound.
Then it tucked its nose under its paws.
Nutmeg yawned again, bigger this time.
Their eyes were drooping.
Sam felt sleepy too.
A warm, cozy feeling filled their chest.
They came to a soft patch of moss under a big oak tree.
The moss was springy and cool.
Sam sat down carefully.
Nutmeg curled up right next to them, warm and safe.
Above them, an owl hooted softly.
The sound was low and gentle, like a lullaby.
"Goodnight, owl," Sam whispered.
The owl blinked its big round eyes.
Sam held the lantern close.
Its glow made everything feel like a hug.
"The forest is so sleepy," Sam said one more time.
Nutmeg's breathing was slow and even.
Their tail wrapped around Sam's leg.
Sam felt the cool night air on their cheeks.
They felt the soft moss beneath them.
They felt Nutmeg's warmth beside them.
Sam closed their eyes.
The forest was quiet and kind.
"Time to go home," Sam whispered.
But they were too sleepy to move just yet.
So they sat there a moment longer, under the oak tree, holding the lantern.
The forest hummed a quiet, sleepy song.
Then Sam stood up slowly.
Nutmeg followed, yawning.
They walked back down the path together.
Their cottage glowed warmly in the distance.
Inside, Sam climbed into bed.
Nutmeg curled up at the foot, already dreaming.
Sam pulled the blanket up to their chin.
The lantern sat on the windowsill, glowing softly.
Outside, the forest was sleeping.
The rabbit, the hedgehog, the owl — all dreaming.
And Sam closed their eyes.
The forest is so sleepy.
And so was Sam.
