Once upon a time, three kind bears lived in a little cottage at the edge of a quiet wood.
There was Great Big Papa Bear, Medium-Sized Mama Bear, and Tiny Little Baby Bear.
One sunny morning, Mama Bear made porridge for breakfast.
She poured it into three bowls… one big bowl, one medium bowl, and one tiny bowl.
"Oh my," said Papa Bear softly, "this porridge is much too hot to eat."
"Let's take a gentle walk while it cools," suggested Mama Bear.
So the three bears wandered into the woods, humming a little tune.
While they were gone, a little girl named Goldilocks was walking nearby.
She had golden curls that bounced as she walked.
Goldilocks saw the cottage and knocked softly on the door.
No one answered, so she peeked inside.
"What a cozy little house," she whispered.
She saw three bowls of porridge on the table.
Goldilocks was quite hungry from her walk.
She tasted the porridge in the big bowl… but it was still too hot.
She tasted the porridge in the medium bowl… but it was a bit too cool.
She tasted the porridge in the tiny bowl… and it was just right.
So she ate it all up.
Now Goldilocks felt sleepy.
She saw three chairs by the fireplace.
She sat in the big chair… but it was much too hard.
She sat in the medium chair… but it was a bit too soft.
She sat in the tiny chair… and it was just right and so comfortable.
But oh dear… the little chair was too small, and it creaked and wobbled beneath her.
Goldilocks stood up quickly, and the chair stayed in one piece.
Now she felt very sleepy indeed.
She climbed the stairs and found a bedroom with three beds.
She lay down on the big bed… but it was much too firm.
She lay down on the medium bed… but it was a bit too squishy.
She lay down on the tiny bed… and it was just right, soft and warm.
Goldilocks yawned and drifted off to sleep.
Soon the three bears came home from their walk.
"Someone has been tasting my porridge," said Papa Bear gently.
"Someone has been tasting my porridge too," said Mama Bear.
"Someone has been tasting my porridge," squeaked Baby Bear, "and ate it all up… but that's okay."
They looked at the chairs.
"Someone has been sitting in my chair," said Papa Bear softly.
"Someone has been sitting in my chair too," said Mama Bear.
"Someone has been sitting in my chair," said Baby Bear kindly, "but it's alright."
The bears climbed upstairs very quietly.
"Someone has been sleeping in my bed," whispered Papa Bear.
"Someone has been sleeping in my bed too," whispered Mama Bear.
"Someone has been sleeping in my bed," whispered Baby Bear, "and there she is."
Goldilocks opened her eyes and saw three friendly faces looking at her.
"Oh my," she said softly, "I'm so sorry. I was so tired and hungry."
"That's quite alright, little one," said Mama Bear with a warm smile.
"Would you like to stay for more porridge?" asked Papa Bear gently.
Goldilocks smiled and nodded.
The bears made fresh porridge for everyone.
They all sat together and ate breakfast, laughing and talking.
When it was time to go, the bears walked Goldilocks safely home.
"Come visit us anytime," called Baby Bear, waving goodbye.
And Goldilocks walked home slowly, feeling warm and happy…
thinking of her new friends…
as the sun set soft and golden…
over the quiet, peaceful wood.
